William Barnwell's 1819 China voyage letter 1819.

Letter written by William Barnwell, Jr. November 9, 1819, to Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Hood of Philadelphia, Penn., while aboard the U.S. Navy frigate Congress. The Congress, being the first U.S. Navy vessel to enter Chinese waters, was sent there to protect American trade taking place in the area. Includes a brief description of the voyage from Brazil to China. Remarks on how widespread illness in Whampoa prevented the ship from sailing further than Chuampa ("24 miles below Canton"). Barnwell also indicates that the presence of the Congress sparked international rumors of conflict.
